Board to Beers plans to move from its current Poplar Ave digs into the former McAlister’s Deli space at 3482 Plaza Ave. Owner Taylor Herndon shared the news on social media, saying:
Change is always scary, but it’s also so exciting. We’ve been keeping a secret for months. We announced it originally at our 4th anniversary party in August but patiently waited to announce it to the rest of the public… Next year, this beautiful building will be Board to Beers’ new home.
Inspired by her love of games, Herndon opened Board to Beers in August 2020. The website describes the establishment as “a dream that became a reality through her hard work and determination.”
The bar offers a library of over 2,500 board, card, and role-playing games for guests to enjoy, with a $5 entry fee and various membership options. Patrons can also attend events, tournaments, and a weekly trivia night.
Herndon told What Now Memphis that the move to Plaza Ave will provide more rental space and allow the bar to host additional events. The new location will also feature a larger menu, including a full coffee lineup alongside the current offerings of pizza, wings, and other light bites. Details about the new food items are still being finalized.
According to The Daily Memphian, the new 4,100-square-foot venue includes a basement that’s roughly the same size. The main level will serve as the primary gaming area, while the basement will feature two “secret rooms” for group events.
As a nod to Herndon’s love for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, one room will carry the whimsical theme, similar to the secret room at the existing location. The basement will include office space for staff and game designers, along with an additional restroom.
Currently open Thursday through Sunday, Board to Beers plans to add Tuesdays to its schedule and extend daily hours once the new space opens. Herndon expects to receive the keys in early December, with renovations starting shortly thereafter. The new location is slated to welcome players by April 1, 2025.
