According to recent city permit filings, Rooster’s Blues House is headed to The Highland Strip at 535 S Highland St, taking over the former site of The Bluff.
Situated in the heart of downtown Oxford, Mississippi, the original Rooster’s has been a beloved blues venue on The Square for over 15 years. Known for its rich history and soulful ambiance, the joint offers an intimate space to enjoy “authentic, gritty blues” performances by “electrifying live acts from across the state,” as noted on its website.
Rooster’s owner Scott Michael draws on a fascinating past. Once a renowned boxer, he fought under the moniker Rooster T. Feathers, which inspired the establishment’s name. His tenacity in the ring now fuels his dedication to the iconic blues bar.
And Michael is no stranger to the Memphis nightlife scene. He worked as a bouncer at legendary music venue Omni New Daisy on Beale, where his love for blues was born. He later founded his own security companies, but his true passion always remained with music.
Michael brought his vision for Rooster’s to life in 2007, transforming the old Jennie’s Hallmark store into a rustic venue reminiscent of Mississippi juke joints. The space boasts wide plank wood floors, rusted tin walls, and custom mason jar pendant lights.
The Rooster’s menu features a variety of Southern classics, including burgers, po’boys, shrimp and grits, and ribs, along with an array of blues-inspired and classic cocktails. At the Memphis location, patrons can expect the same bold flavors and soulful atmosphere that has made the original spot a hit.
Michael told What Now Memphis that the opening date for Rooster’s Blues House on Highland is not yet determined, but he hopes it will be “very soon.” He promised to provide more details next week, so stay tuned for updates.
