In a heartfelt Facebook post, 117 Prime announced that it will serve its last steak this Saturday, April 20, 2024. “This decision, made by our ownership, was only reached after considerable deliberation and after exhausting every possible solution,” wrote the restaurant.

Since teaming up with restaurateurs Roger Sapp and Craig Blondis of Central BBQ in May 2018, executive chef and co-owner Ryan Trimm has earned acclaim for his traditional steakhouse fare with a Southern flair. In addition to 117 Prime, the trio also operates popular breakfast concept Sunrise Memphis.

Trimm told The Commercial Appeal that maintaining a steakhouse in the Downtown Memphis climate has become unsustainable. “A steakhouse concept is too expensive to run in the current conditions of Downtown Memphis,” he explained. “Downtown has not felt as safe as it once did, we have found that this is steering our guests away.”

Despite the closure, there’s hope for the future of the 117 Union Ave space. Trimm has expressed interest in developing a new concept that better aligns with Downtown Memphis’ evolving landscape, but details about that concept remain under wraps for now. Alternatively, the space could be leased to a new tenant, since Sapp owns the building.

On another positive note, Belle Tavern, the bar behind the steakhouse, will continue to serve up its pub grub and wide whiskey selection. Patrons can access the tavern through its entrance at 117 Barboro Alley.

Stay tuned for updates on the future of the space currently occupied by 117 Prime, and be sure to visit the steakhouse one last time before it closes up shop on Saturday.
