Owner David Lambert has deep roots in the coffee industry. In the ‘90s, he succeeded his father, Bill Lambert, as president of Lambert’s Coffee Service, a wholesale coffee company founded in 1971.
Lambert’s later expanded into retail by acquiring Ugly Mug Coffee Roasters and by 2014, Ugly Mug had taken over Poplar Perk’n coffee shop. Just last year, the retail branch of Ugly Mug rebranded as Ramblin’ Joe’s, though Lambert’s continues to roast and sell coffee under the Ugly Mug name.
With the new Ramblin’ Joe’s, Lambert plans to enhance drive-thru efficiency with double lanes and advanced technology, according to Memphis Business Journal. He’s collaborating with local real estate agency Jones Aur to secure locations and plans to introduce patios with amenities like bike racks and electric car chargers.
Ramblin’ Joe’s currently operates at its flagship Poplar Ave location, Memphis International Airport, Arlington, and Nashville. The eclectic menu offers coffees, sandwiches, smoothies, and snacks, ranging from classic cappuccinos and bagels to more indulgent treats like the Full Moon Frappe and Lemon Matcha Croissant.
The forthcoming Ramblin’ Joe’s cafe is slated to open by August 2024, so watch for updates as construction progresses in East Memphis.
