Buster’s Liquors is expanding its presence with the opening of a second location, “Buster’s Liquors East,” at 5851 Poplar Avenue in the Ridgeway Trace Shopping Center on February 1st. Owned by Josh Hammond, Morgan Hammond, and Gay Hammond, the 18,000 square feet space, formerly a Staples store, offers three times more car traffic than their original Highland location. This development was first reported by Memphis Flyer.

The new establishment caters to the growing trend of larger retail wine and spirits shops. According to Memphis Flyer, the store will boast a “tasting kiosk” for events, a walk-in cigar humidor, and a climate-controlled room for fine wine. Additionally, two conference rooms will facilitate private tastings. The expansion aligns with the demand in East Memphis for an extensive liquor selection.

The Hammond family, who founded Buster’s Liquors in 1954, has witnessed the brand’s evolution. Their Highland store, now playfully known as “Buster’s Liquors University,” underwent major renovations in 2015. Last August, they introduced “Buster’s Butcher,” a full-service meat and cheese butcher shop, next to the Highland location. While the new East location currently operates as a specialty liquor store, plans for a butcher shop in the space next door are brewing. The Hammonds, considering customer demand and success, aim to replicate the Buster’s Butcher concept.

Looking ahead, there is the possibility of expanding to additional locations and embracing the arrival of the fourth generation, as Bear Hammond joins the family business. With a legacy spanning 70 years, the family remains committed to preserving the brand’s reputation for friendly service, exceptional value, and community engagement.
